Jim Downs Memorial Ride

July 15, 2016 | LA Motorcyclist | photo: André Pinces

Los Angeles-based friends of Jim Downs have organized a ride in his memory for Saturday, July 16. Starting at Pro Italia in Glendale (2:30 PM meet; KSU 3 PM), the group will head down Chevy Chase, then around to Griffith for a moment of silence, before ending at the Black Cat Tavern in Silver Lake. NOTE: Space at the Black Cat is limited to those on list for Jim's Memorial due to the venue's small seating capacity.

From the organizers: "If you want to ride, then ride. This is not formal, I haven't called a single person or group, or arranged anything, so don't expect anything organized. I may even ask someone else to lead as well, just wanted to do something for Jim's memory."

Everyone is welcome to attend the ride.

Downs, an avid motorcycle rider with extensive ties to both the moto and television world as a film editor, photographer, producer and writer, was taken from us during an accident in Alaska, where he was on assignment shooting a new television series pilot. Downs was the creative director at and was also a contributor to, lending his filming and editing skills to the official 2014 LA Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride video and offering up his offroad experiences in the article: Solo on the North Rim.

We will miss him very much ... his friendship, his advice, his vision and his lust for life. Hope the trails in heaven are just as satisfying.

The only constant in life is change ... and summer sees a new chapter in LA Motorcyclist's Tech Column, Chains 'n' Sprockets. Taking over the writing duties is Moto Republic's Jeff King, who will be providing monthly articles on a variety of bike maintenance and inspection topics.

We are thankful to have had Moto Classic Garage's Bob Gregor as our first regular columnist and will be archiving his columns for continued reference.

You may remember King from a past LA Moto profile which appeared just after the opening of his Los Angeles- based shop in January. (Moto Republic: NE LA gets its own Community DIY Motorcycle Shop)

The iconic 6th Street Bridge in Los Angeles is being closed for demolition. A nostalgic motorcyclist visits the bridge one last time ...

Past Motorcycle Film Festival nominee Jacob Moss is hoping his latest project – The Viaduct – will again garner him an MFF nod for the upcoming 4th annual New York event in September.
