May is Motorcycle Awareness Month

May 7, 2015 | Press Release

California Highway Patrol (CHP), Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) & Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, (the LAPD) would like to reach out to  motorists and motorcyclists alike, encouraging them to "share the road" in order to reduce motorcycle deaths and injuries. Motorcycles are among the smallest and most vulnerable vehicles on the road, putting riders at greater risk of death and serious injury in a crash.  In fact, according to the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 30 times more likely than occupants of cars to die in a crash, and five times more likely to be injured.

Solo on the North Rim

April 21, 2015 | Jim Downs

Somewhere ahead through the thick forest of ponderosa pine, over open, sandy meadows and beneath the shimmering light of quaking aspen stands, was the chasm. An acute boundary of geographic extremes, where the dense woods teaming with elk and herds of bison would vanish abruptly into a mile deep panorama of sky and gorge. Soon the rough dirt trail I was navigating my heavy adventure motorcycle along takes me to this precipice. The dim green glow of the pine needle canopy overhead would relent; at first through distant patches of gold, white sunlight where I could steal a momentary glance of the void before having to return my focus to handling the massive machine over the unending onslaught of obstacles on the challenging trail.

Hanging with the Ton Up Boys

April 8, 2015 | Rahoul Ghose

Cruising down an empty 105 at near ton up speeds towards Anaheim and a meet up with the newly incorporated 59 Club of OC, the pain of a 7am Sunday rise seems a distant memory.

Morning fog off the Pacific Ocean makes my helmet and dark tinted visor choice seem a little crazy at the outset -- visibility issues aside -- but now with the sun peeking through all I can think of is how smooth the ride is on Thruxton999 ... rear Ohlins, fork brace, steering damper ... all welcome upgrades which handle the grooved concrete nicely at high speed. A predicted hour-long excursion East is quickly looking more like 40 minutes.
